Description

Here is a dog tag of a French tank battalion with a copy of its military file.
Jean GENDT was born on December 1, 1901 at Basse Kontz in Moselle.
He joined the army on April 9, 1921.
He will occupy with his unit the Ruhr in Germany in 1923.
He receives the serial number 1179. After the army, he is a customs officer.
When war was declared in 1939, he returned to his regiment and became chief of his tank.
On June 4, 1940, he was taken prisoner.
He was liberated by the Germans on October 17, 1940 thanks to agreements with the French.
It is very difficult to find a Tank Battalion dog tag with its military file, many were destroyed in 1944.
The 509th French Tank Battalion had Renault FT17 and Hotchkiss H39 tanks. He will fight in Gembloux in Belgium and in the Marne.
