    Description

These are scenes from the Journey to the West, famous in China.
Size is about 10" wide by 7" tall.
I acquired this in approx 1988 while teaching in China.
    It is printed on cardstock.
Quality, character, and topic are typical of the 1980s in China, which was a developing country at the time.
Traditional stories had just been revived in China a few years earlier (after years of being banned), and Journey to the West was wildly popular among kids, especially the Monkey King character, Sen Wu Kong.
There was a very popular TV serial of Journey to the West, and this print was catering to that fame, kind of like comic books that spin off of movies here.
It was apparently printed in a fairly low-tech mechanical multi-block-print method with the three primary colors red, blue, and yellow.
The primary colors blend in areas to make secondary colors like green and purple, and there is some characteristic mismatch of outline and colors in some parts.
The style is similar to that of some Buddhist religious prints.
