Description
Civil War Battle Of Fredericksburg Drum. This drum came from the Collection of Bob Timberlake a renown collector. The drum belonged to William E. Scranton, Company I of the 15th Connecticut Infantry and was carried at the battle of Fredericksburg. The drum was painted shortly after the Battle with paints taken from a house in Fredericksburg at the time of the battle. Included with the drum is an original set of civil war drums sticks that belonged to William E. Scranton as well as a photo copy of him after the war with a drum corps. A copy of the notes taken when the drum was restored by a museum in the 1980s will also be included. The rope, heads and leather ears have been replaced which is common with these original Civil War drums. There is not a maker's lable inside of the drum. The drum has several cracks in the shell that were repaired when the drum was restored in the 80s. Please note in the pictures. There are also slight pin holes in the skin heads. There are no snares on this drum, however there are the remains of a metal snar strainer. This drum is a beautiful display piece with solid documentation to William Scranton and the Battle of Fredericksburg. It should be considered a display piece only. I would not attempt to play this drum. All in all this is a wonderful example of a Civil War drum that will interest serious collectors. On a final note William Scranton service was brief. From what I could dig up on the 15th Connecticut The Battle of Fredericksburg was the only major battle he would have participated in during his service. Also note, the 15th Connecticut was held in reserve for most of the battle in the town of Fredericksburg. This makes the story of him finding paint in house understandable. The 15th did make a brief assault on the evening of the 13th.Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about the drum.
Happy Bidding. Don't miss your chance on an authentic yet unique Civil War drum tied to the Battle of Fredericksburg one of the bloodiest battles of The War Between the States.
